RENOVATION

HEALTHCARE

For the Sisters of St. Joseph of Hamilton, Larkin Architect Limited completely renovated the existing 60 bedroom Motherhouse and designed a new 12 bedroom Infirmary wing complete with its own nursing station, chapel, communal dining room, therapeutic spa, and a generously day-lit activities room.

While the renovation of the Motherhouse’s interior updated the building’s life safety, accessibility and environmental systems, the project’s foremost mandate was to respond to the religious order’s changing demographics and community needs.

Importantly, the Infirmary was designed to provide state-of-the-art health care within a home-like environment. The institutional model was avoided by creating clusters of rooms with single loaded corridors with views to a contemplative prayer garden to the north and outdoor living room with terraces overlooking Hamilton Mountain on the southern exposure.
