Our Lady of Sorrows Church
Etobicoke, Ontario
ADDITION | RENOVATION | RESTORATION
RELIGIOUS | MIXED-USE
Larkin Architect Limited has been working with Our Lady of Sorrows Church to update the existing church to reflect contemporary needs while protecting and preserving its beautiful historic character. The overall project goal was to provide a graceful and welcoming entrance to the church for all community members.
Divided into two distinct and consecutive phases, Phase One addressed improvements to the existing building systems. This included updated electrical systems, lighting, and restoration of the liturgical environment including the mosaics and decorative plaster ceiling in the nave. Work was also completed to the basement parish hall and meeting rooms to make them more functional, welcoming, and improve the access to AV technology.
Phase Two provides a contemporary light-filled addition that allows barrier-free accessibility throughout the facility. A new heavy timber and glass entrance vestibule creates a welcoming lantern to extend an invitational gesture to the community. The addition includes an outdoor forecourt to create a new public piazza at this entrance.
