2014 Wood Works Awards: Institutional/Commercial Wood Design Award
In 2009, Larkin Architect Limited was retained in to design a new 850 seat facility for a growing congregation in Barrie, Ontario. This project was aligned to the parish’s vision to provide a new church that reflects a traditional “Simple Gothic” style while meeting all of the modern requirements of an active and growing faith community.
Mass timber construction was chosen both to achieve the soaring Gothic vaults while also serving as a more sustainable approach through reduced embodied carbon. The result was a distinctive ecclesiastical timber structure that brings warmth, beauty, and environmental stewardship into meaningful dialogue. In recognition of its design and craftsmanship, the project received a Wood Design Award in 2013.

Situated along Essa Road between agricultural fields, this project embraced a spare economy of form taking cues from the local rural vernacular. Using time-honored materials, the design was developed to integrate seamlessly into its natural surroundings.

The sense of movement towards the sacred is highlighted through a series of planned “thresholds” that invite parishioners to pause, reflect, and prepare to participate fully, actively, and consciously in the sacred mysteries of the liturgy.
