Larkin Architect Limited was first retained to complete a total interior renovation of this iconic, National Historic Building designed by Joseph Connolly and acclaimed for being an exemplar of the High Victorian, French Gothic Revival style. Our approach was guided by the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada, plus respect for the parish’s desire to maintain the rich Catholic Tradition and familiarity of their historic church while providing for the needs of an active, 21st century parish.
Non-gothic revival elements, introduced in the 1960’s, were either eliminated or transformed to better reflect the building’s Gothic style. The main interior Gothic architectural elements such as the nave arches, triforium walls, sanctuary liturgical environment, and side-aisle stained glass windows were all renovated to reinforce a cohesive, historically accurate interior environment that was consistent with its historic Gothic exterior.
Exterior work included in this contract saw the restoration of the Rose window, exterior entrances, and lighting of the front façade. New mechanical and electrical systems were introduced including several new geothermal wells.
The basement was renovated to provide community space for gathering, banquets, and parish events. The existing stone foundation was kept exposed for an honest portrayal of the historic building structure for church events and gatherings.
